Two little words

One of the most uplifting things you can do for someone else is to say “thank you”.  The simple act of showing genuine gratitude to someone can change their whole demeanor and have a profound impact on your own state-of-mind.

B and I are building a house.  During our recent site visit we met two plasterers onsite – a Filipino husband and wife duo.  I introduced myself to the wife.  I thanked her for working on my house and told her she was doing a great job.  The effect on her was instantaneous.  Her face lit up and she thanked me for thanking her.

What I wasn’t expecting was the effect this had on me – it brightened me up and made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.  I hadn’t said “thank you” to make myself feel better.  I was simply grateful for the work she was doing and the care she was putting in.

On a scientific level we felt good because our brains released a hit of dopamine – the feel-good drug that triggers positive emotions.

On a more personal level, I think we both felt good because people don’t say “thank you” enough to colleagues, friends, family etc…   And when we do it’s usually at the surface level and not something that is truly felt.

It only takes a moment to say “thank you” to someone and a little integrity to be genuine.

Thank you to anyone who is reading this blog post.
